What is yoga?
Yoga is an ancient physical and mental discipline, that can help everyone to become more flexible, relaxed and find inner peace. The word “yoga” means “union”. In yoga, we aim to unite and harmonize body, mind, and soul. These three levels of being are closely related and influence each other.
Benefits of Yoga
Yoga strengthens our muscles, organs, and the immune system and it improves coordination and balance. Yoga reduces stress, fear, and anxiety and it has a positive effect on our mental balance, and our happiness.
Kundalini yoga is generally more dynamic than Hatha Yoga. Movement, conscious breath, concentration and sound release our inner energy (the so called “Kundalini”). The release of this energy helps our body to relax, our mind to become calm, and our awareness to sharpen.
Extreme bends, twists, headstand and other exercises that require special means or skills are not part of Kundalini Yoga.
Yogi Bhajan brought Kundalini yoga to the Western world. He was born on August 26, 1926 in Kot Harkarn, formerly India and now Pakistan. He was always interested in medical questions and natural healing methods and started studying yoga as a little boy. At the age of 16, he became master of kundalini yoga. He visited spiritual leaders in various Ashrams in India and the Himalaya. 1968 he got invited to teach at the University of Toronto from where he found his way to Los Angeles.
Yogi Bhajan died on October 6, 2004 in New Mexico at age 75.
